Daily Snap: Second base

Gear: Canon 5D Mark III; Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS
Settings: f/5.6, 1/1,600th of a second, ISO 1600, 300mm

Interesting composition on this frame. I see the two players forming a right angle, and that right angle is echoed on the scoreboard.

Shot pretty tight, so stopped down to f/5.6 on this cloudy day, punched up the ISO. Nice, even light, though. And a pretty lively frame -- every corner offers something to chew on.

Daily Snap: Bouncin' around

Busy day had me bouncing between three assignments simultaneously, but got a couple decent ones:

Daily Snap: Softball stuff

Gear: Canon 5D Mark III; Canon 300mm 2.8 IS
Settings: f/4, 1/4,000th of a second, ISO 400, 300mm
Story: Nice, sharp slide at second base during a high school softball tourney.

Bonus. Here's one out of left field -- not literally. But something a little different. Girl touches up the eye black for a teammate in between innings. Thought it was a nice moment, something you don't see very often. This was at f/4 right around minimum focusing distance. I like it.

Daily Snap: Rundown

Gear: Nikon D300s; Nikon 300mm f/2.8 IS
Settings: f/5.6, 1/1,250th of a second, ISO 1000, 300mm
The story: Nice rundown captured during this high school baseball game. Whenever I'm shooting the field in baseball (infielders & baserunners), I like stopping down to f/5.6 to ensure good focus and better depth of field. Even at f/5.6 on this cropped-sensor body, though, you'll see the depth of field doesn't quite extend to the player at right.

Daily Snap: Skate stuff

Gear: Nikon D300S; Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8
Settings: f/8, 1/1,250th of a second, ISO 640, 17mm

The story: Impromptu skate photography. I drive by this little park at least once a week, hoping there will be some skaters to photograph. Finally today, I caught a college kid home for Easter break just riding by himself.

I purposefully said "impromptu skating" because I wasn't really looking for a great skate photograph, just an environmental portrait. Man, I really wish I had a speedlite at camera left to fill in those shadows and even out the exposure.
